| Welcome to Candy Cane Lane
Edmonton's Candy Cane Lane is visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors every Christmas season and it has become traditional for Edmontonians to flock to this West End Christmas Light and Decoration display every year. The sights and sounds of Candy Cane Lane instill the spirit of Christmas in all of us. The colourful light displays and unique decorations bring out the magic of the season for young and old alike. Christmas in Edmonton is not complete without a walk down Candy Cane Lane. HGTV documentaryIn 2004 Candy Cane Lane was the subject of a documentary filmed for HGTV (Home and Garden Television) Please watch you local TV listings for times. For three magical weeks in December, a stretch of 200 Edmonton homes is transformed into a dazzling display of lights and decorations. Candy Cane Lane has become a must-see attraction of the Christmas season, wowing thousands of delighted visitors every year. This documentary follows three guys who get caught up in the whirlwind of decorating, determined to show their creative side despite tight budgets and the looming deadline of opening night. Since exterior decorating is a guy thing, like having the best lawn on the block, each man develops his own style to try to stand out from the rest. Expectations are high, but our quirky guys come through with humour and flair. Our History Candy Cane lane was started over 35 years ago by a small group of residents in Crestwood Community. As with most things it started off small with a few houses putting up some impressive light displays. The spirit spread to other residents up and down 148 street from 100 avenue to 92 avenue where today more that 10 city blocks are now officially considered being on the lane. It is all done on a volunteer basis and there is no commercial or municipal sponsorship of any kind. Over the past few seasons another group of residents on the lane thought that with so many visitors coming to enjoy the sights it might be an idea to give the visitors an opportunity to show their Christmas spirit and ask them to bring non perishable food items to drop off for the Edmonton Food Bank. This has proven to be a raging success and tens of thousands of pounds of food is collected for this worthy cause . If you plan to visit this year please remember to bring something to help out the less fortunate in our community. This year the lane officially opens Saturday December 12 and lights up at 5:00 to around midnight until January 2. Park and Walk or Sleigh The best way to enjoy Candy Cane Lane is to walk it if at all possible. It can get very congested at peak times such as on weekend nights just prior the Christmas and you can end up spending a lot of time in traffic. This causes accumulations of exhaust fumes which becomes unpleasant for the residents as well as for the walkers. Park it and walk it so we can all enjoy the fresh air or
